It's often said that Japanese English doesn't make sense to native. Our useful Katakana is not always work well, especially for English.
For example, "mansion" in Japanese English is wrong but for the apartment house originally in English. "boyfriend" or "girlfriend" are not used for friends but a special one. So you'd better use for "friends" or "male friend" and "female friends".
Japanese English problems
I read "Japanese English problems" attached to this blog and realized difficulty of the English conversation again.

By the way, I was able to speak a smattering of English with driver of the exclusive car, Mr. Glenn in Yosemite tour.
He was driver when I visited five years ago here, but was not able to speak at all at that time.
Good for you to have spoken to the same driver as before.
